MESA, Ariz. - Police have arrested a gunman accused killing one person and wounding five others during a rampage in Arizona, Fox 10 Phoenix reported.
Mesa interim police chief John Meza confirmed to reporters at the scene that the suspect was arrested.
Additional information was not provided by police regarding the allegedly gunman who went on a shooting rampage in at least three different locations in Mesa.
The rampage, which included a shooting at a motel, a carjacking and a home invasion, prompted an intense manhunt for the suspect.
Mesa police searched the trunk of cars, interviewed witnesses and called in the SWAT and canine units from other agencies to assist.
“If we have to go door-to-door, we will,” Detective Esteban Flores told reporters.
The detective said the incident was sparked by an argument inside a motel room which spilled outside. Three people were injured before the suspect shot a person at a nearby restaurant and carjacked a gray Honda Accord.
Two more people were subsequently wounded at separate apartment complexes in Mesa, including one during a home invasion.
Several locations in the area were placed on lockdown amid a heavy law enforcement presence, including police searching car trunks and interviewing witnesses. The Arizona Department of Public Safety sent its SWAT team to Mesa to assist with the effort, DPS spokesman Bart Graves said. Scottsdale police are also sending SWAT and canine units.
The shootings occurred near the East Valley Institute of Technology. Nearby Mesa Community College issued an emergency alert, saying its campus was on lockdown and anyone already there should proceed to the safest location.
Vinny Carbone owns an auto body shop near the shootings. He was getting ready to open up when he heard a man yell "help, help." He later saw a woman outside the motel with what looked like a bullet hole in her side.
"Right now, our hearts and prayers are with the people of Mesa, the individuals affected by this tragedy, and all law enforcement and first responders working to assist the victims," Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said.
