Police in Brazil say a bus carrying about 50 passengers plunged down into a deep ravine in the mountains of the country's southeast, killing at least 40 people.

Police Col. Paulo Henrique Hemm tells the G1 news portal that at least 12 injured people were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Hemm says the accident happened late Saturday in a mountainous area of Santa Catarina state. He says the driver may have lost control on a curve and the bus plunged into a ravine 400 meters (1,300 feet) deep.
