A spy working for a country in the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State in the Middle East helped three British schoolgirls cross into Syria, a Turkish official claimed Thursday.
"Do you know who was the person who helped these girls? This person was caught. It turned out to be someone who worked in the intelligence services of a country in the coalition," state-run Anatolian news agency reported Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu as saying in an interview with broadcaster A Haber, according to Sky News.
Cavusoglu said the agent was not American or from a European Union country, but did not elaborate. He did not say where the agent is being held.
London teenagers Kadiza Sultana, 16, Shamima Begum, 15, and Amira Abase, 15, are now believed to be with ISIS militants in Syria.
Turkey has said it needs more information from foreign intelligence agencies to intercept potential terror recruits, Reuters reports.
