Governor of Russia's Sakhalin Island arrested on charges of accepting $5.6-million bribe

MOSCOW – A Moscow court has ordered the governor of the Russian Pacific Island of Sakhalin to be held in custody on charges of accepting a $5.6-million bribe.

Gov. Alexander Khoroshavin was arrested Wednesday and flown to Moscow, where the Basmanny district court ordered him held pending the probe.

Investigator Sergei Chernov said in court that Khoroshavin is accused of accepting a $5.6-million bribe and faces 15 years in prison if convicted, according to Russian news reports. Khoroshavin rejected the charges and asked to be freed on bail. Several of his suspected accomplices were also arrested.

Russia's top investigative agency said Khoroshavin's arrest reflected the government's determination to combat corruption regardless of an official's rank. It said big amounts of cash and jewelry were confiscated from Khoroshavin's offices and apartments.
