MEXICO CITY – Mexican political parties are desperate to convince voters their candidates aren't tied to drug gangs, violence or corruption. So one has gone to extreme lengths to pick candidates in an open, transparent way: It held a lottery.
The National Regeneration Movement party had some 3,000 vetted hopefuls put their names in a drum on Sunday and the names of 200 people who will run as candidates were pulled out at random.
People linked to drug gangs have sometimes gotten parties to allow them to run for office in Mexico by promising to pay for their own campaigns.
Another party dropped from its candidates list a woman whose husband is a former mayor who was arrested for allegedly protecting a drug cartel.
