YANGON, Myanmar – Myanmar's government has reached an agreement with student protesters who have been marching to Yangon to seek educational reforms, but the deal announced by the two sides still needs parliamentary approval.
Public support has been increasing for the students as they marched several hundred miles (kilometers) to demand the scrapping of a recently enacted education law they say fails to give autonomy to universities and does not allow the formation of student unions.
The government accepted their demands for an increased budget for education and the reinstatement of students expelled for political activism.
The government has appeared nervous about the public support for the students. It issued a special announcement last week suggesting they were being manipulated to stir up instability, though it did not identify by whom.
