Jamaica laborer charged with slaying of US retiree who owned home on island

A Jamaican man has been arrested and charged with the killing of a retired teacher from New Jersey who had a second home on the Caribbean island.

Jamaican police say Glenda Campbell's body was found Jan. 9 near the shore of a fishing beach located less than an hour's drive away from her residence in southern St. Catherine parish.

The 56-year-old woman's throat was slashed and an autopsy this week found blunt force trauma to her head.

Campbell's family originally was from Jamaica.

Police announced Thursday they have arrested Maurice Palmer, a laborer who lives near Campbell's modest Jamaican house close to Old Harbor. It was not immediately known if he had a lawyer.

Public records show Campbell retired in 2008 from the school system in Paterson, New Jersey.
