UN worker taken in Central African Republic day after militia kidnaps 2 humanitarian workers

BANGUI, Central African Republic – A United Nations official says a Kurdish female staffer has been kidnapped in Central African Republic.

The official said the anti-Balaka Christian militia kidnapped the staffer Tuesday morning in Bangui. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to speak to the press, said a Ugandan colleague who escaped told them about it.

A driver said Monday that two people, a local and a French woman working for a Catholic medical NGO, were kidnapped. France's Foreign Ministry confirmed a 67-year-old French woman was kidnapped Monday in Central African Republic.

The kidnappings by the anti-Balaka come after the arrest of their widely feared commander, Rodrigue Ngaibona, on Saturday.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in sectarian violence between Christians and Muslims over the past year.
