Moments after French police brought to a dramatic end two related hostage situations in and near Paris, a new situation emerged involving captives held at a jewelry story in southern France.
Local reports from Montpellier said a suspect held two shopkeepers for about an hour, threatening them with a gun, but no one was killed or wounded, according to Midi Libre said. With the nation on tenterhooks following Wednesday's bloody attack by jihadists on a Paris satirical magazine, a related police killing and the culmination of two sieges brought to simultaneous ends, special police forces moved in quickly, cutting power to the shop, reports said.
A police officer told The Associated Press the attacker was locked inside the shop, with police ready to intervene outside.
Montpellier prosecutor Christophe Barret told Midi Libre, the situation is “very calm” and there is no reason to connect the siege in Montpellier with the events in Paris and in Northern France. People from the surrounding shops were evacuated by the police and the electricity was cut to prepare the police attack to release the hostages, the newspaper reported.
