China arrests Korean-American aid worker running vocational school in North Korean border town

BEIJING – The lawyer for a Korean-American aid worker working in a Chinese city near the North Korean border says his client has been arrested.

The arrest suggests that authorities are increasingly sensitive about activities by foreigners in the region.

Shanghai-based lawyer Zhang Peihong said he was notified Friday by prosecutors in China's northeastern Yanbian prefecture that Peter Hahn, a Christian who ran a vocational school for Chinese and Korean youth, was arrested on charges of embezzlement and possession of fake invoices.

Zhang said the charges appear to be an excuse to incriminate the man, who also had provided food to North Korean children.

Zhang says no trial date has been set.
