A Bronx teen accused of robbing and drop-kicking a 24-year-old woman as she held her 2-month-old infant says he’s sorry because he didn't realize that she was carrying a baby.
“I’m sorry,” Alonzo Brown, 18, told a reporter from the local ABC affiliate from inside a police car. “I didn’t know it was the baby that was there. I didn’t see the baby.”
Brown was caught on surveillance video kicking Odelia Orozco, 24, in the back at about 12:45 p.m Tuesday. He grabbed her cellphone and ran off, leaving Orozco lying on the sidewalk crying as she held her baby.
Brown told ABC 7 that he only noticed Orozco was holding a baby when she hit the floor.
The baby was strapped to her chest in a carrier. Both mother and son were only slightly injured.
“I can’t forgive someone like that,” Orozco told the New York Post in Spanish. “If he was a hardworking man who understood what it was like to work by the sweat of his brow, then I would have sympathy for him, but he’s a criminal. How many other women has he hurt?”
Brown has 11 prior arrests including petit larceny and at least two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Post.
He is now facing multiple charges including robbery, attempted robbery, assault, and act in a manner injurious to a child, according to ABC 7.
Brown was caught around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, hiding at his uncle's house in the Bronx. Police tracked him down thanks to a stranger in a car who witnessed the robbery and followed Brown.
"He doesn't have a heart," Orozco said of Brown. "Hitting someone, especially a baby? A person like that shouldn't be on the on the street."
