CAIRO – The lawyers of an imprisoned Egyptian-Canadian Al-Jazeera journalist have called for his release, either on the basis of a recent law that allows Egypt's president to deport foreign defendants, or because of health reasons.
Amal Clooney and Mark Wassouf said Monday Mohammed Fahmy should benefit from the law, or be released because he suffers from Hepatitis C.
Fahmy, Australian Peter Greste, and Egyptian Baher Mohammed were charged with helping the Muslim Brotherhood, a group Egypt's government declared a terrorist organization. Fahmy and Greste were sentenced in June to seven years and Mohammed to ten in a trial described as a sham.
The attorneys also called on Al-Jazeera and Qatar to respect a new regional agreement aiming to end tension between Egypt and Qatar over the latter's support of the Brotherhood.
