LISBON, Portugal – Portugal's most senior official in charge of domestic security has resigned amid a corruption scandal.
Miguel Macedo, the government's minister for internal administration, announced Sunday he was quitting after last week's arrests of several senior officials overseen by his department, including the head of the country's immigration service.
The arrests came after a police investigation into the granting of residence permits to wealthy investors from outside the European Union. Portugal offers "golden visas" to non-EU citizens who invest large amounts.
Police said 11 people were suspected of corruption, money laundering, influence peddling and embezzlement, but gave no further details.
Macedo, who ran the police and immigration service, said in a brief statement he wasn't involved in any illegal schemes, but he had lost political authority amid a public outcry.
