A possible suicidal woman allegedly jumped into the Atlantic City bay after throwing her one-month-old girl into the water.
Had it not been for a group of fisherman who spotted the woman on the shore before the incident, the woman and her newborn would have drowned in the waters off the New Jersey coast Sunday afternoon.
According to WCAU-TV, 23-year-old Patricia Shurig was acting strange when she passed a group of fishermen near the Flagship Hotel in Atlantic City.
“We saw the lady walking to the rocks with the baby,” Jose Matos told the press. “So my nephew asked her where she was going with the baby. She didn’t say anything and just kept walking.”
Then, according to the fishermen, Shurig threw the baby into the water and then jumped in.
Two fishermen, Luis Ortiz and Seth Perkins, reportedly jumped into the ocean to save Shurig and her baby. Ortiz said she was about 100 yards out.
“I said, ‘I’m gonna go in for you but you can’t panic and don’t try to grab me,” Ortiz told WCAU-TV. “That’s it. And I went in after her.”
Perkins said Shurig “was completely unresponsive. She was a limp noodle.”
A former Atlantic City firefighter jumped in and was able to corral the unresponsive baby to shore.
“The lady handed me the baby,” Thomas Bell told the news station. “I did two mouth-breathes and turned her over and patted her on the back. She spit up a lot of water. Then I just ran down the jetty and gave her to the EMS people.”
Both mother and daughter were taken to a nearby medical center for treatment.
Sgt. Monica McMenamin of the Atlantic City Police Department said Shurig will be charged with aggravated assault and additional charges are pending. She will be held on $100,000 bail.
“(Sunday had a) great outcome to a nearly deadly incident,” she told The Press of Atlantic City. “Thank goodness for the bravery of those men to get involved.”
