JAKARTA, Indonesia – Indonesia's anti-graft court has sentenced a former top leader of the ruling Democratic Party to eight years in jail for corruption and money laundering.

A five-member panel of Corruption Court ruled that Anas Urbaningrum was guilty of accepting gratification in arranging contracts for government-funded projects to construction companies. Urbaningrum, who was arrested in January, also was fined $25,000.

Wednesday's verdict also ordered Urbaningrun to repay the state all of the more than $10 million he wrongly accepted, or to serve two more years behind bars.

Urbaningrum was elected in 2010 as general chairman of the party, but resigning and abandoning the party in February last year after being named corruption suspect.

The party's chairmanship was later taken over by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
