A top police official says a pre-dawn stampede has killed 10 people at a temple in central India.

The stampede happened early Monday in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh, said S.R. Yadav, Satna's deputy superintendent of police.

Deadly stampedes are fairly common during India's often-chaotic religious gatherings and festivals, where large crowds gather in small areas with few safety or crowd control measures.
