CANBERRA, Australia – An Australian mining magnate turned lawmaker, Clive Palmer, has apologized to China over an extraordinary tirade on national television in which he accused the Chinese of shooting their own people and having no system of justice.
The volatile 60-year-old multi-millionaire has largely avoided comment on the issue since his nationally televised outburst on Australian Broadcasting Corp.'s "Q & A" program on Aug. 18.
But Palmer, who was elected to Parliament in September last year as a lawmaker for his own Palmer United Party, released on Tuesday the text of an apology letter dated Aug. 25 to Chinese Ambassador to Australia Ma Zhaoxu.
The Chines embassy did not immediately to respond on Tuesday to a request for comment on Palmer's apology.
