A Kenya police official says a Somali man in their custody has admitted that he is Hassan Hanafi, who is wanted in Somalia for killing journalists.

The police official said Friday that after weeks of interrogation following his arrest in early August the man, who had originally identified himself as Yusuf Hassan Abdisalam Yusuf, admitted to being Hanafi.

The official who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press says police plan to seek deportation orders. The Somali government has requested Hanafi be extradited to Somalia for prosecution.

Somalia's government says Hanafi is a senior member of the Somali-based al-Qaida-linked terror group al-Shabab who is wanted for the killing of journalists and other citizens. Targeted attacks against Somali journalists were common in 2012 and 2013.
