RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – A Saudi court has sentenced one man to death and 13 others to prison for their role in attacks on government buildings, residential compounds and planning an assault on the U.S. and British embassies.
The Saudi Press Agency reported late Monday that they were part of an alleged 50-member terrorist cell that also plotted to assassinate senior government officials and smuggled heavy weapons into the kingdom from Iraq.
The 13 men were given prison sentences ranging from four to 30 years. A senior government official contacted by The Associated Press declined to give further details.
Al-Qaida militants began a campaign of deadly attacks in the kingdom in 2003 aimed at toppling the monarchy. The kingdom's security forces cracked down hard and forced many militants to flee to neighboring Yemen.
