SOFIA, Bulgaria – A law professor has been appointed as Bulgaria's interim prime minister to lead a caretaker government until a national election is held in October.
Georgi Bliznashki will lead the interim government of experts whose main task will be to restore stability in the European Union's poorest member state, which was shaken by monthlong anti-government protests and a recent banking crisis that fueled people's mistrust in public institutions.
Bliznashki, a 57-year-old former Socialist lawmaker, vowed his Cabinet will ensure fair and transparent elections and confirmed Bulgaria's firm commitment to the EU.
President Rosen Plevneliev, who announced Tuesday's appointment, said he will dissolve the current legislature on Wednesday, and set the election for Oct. 5.
