ANKARA, Turkey – Turkish media reports say police have raided homes of police officers overnight and detained dozens who were involved in a corruption probe targeting four former government ministers.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has long claimed that the corruption allegations that forced the ministers to resign were part of a coup attempt by followers of a U.S.-based moderate Islamic preacher. Many of the officers were removed from posts in a government purge earlier this year.
The state-run Anadolu Agency the police officers are suspected of forming an illegal gang, of illegal wiretapping and fraud. It said they include a former head of an anti-terror unit in Istanbul.
Hurriyet newspaper said at least 52 people were detained in 22 provinces.
