The Israeli military says a civilian vehicle has exploded near the Syrian frontier in the Golan Heights, and that there are several casualties.

In a statement, the army gave no further details. But an Israeli security official says one person was killed and two others were wounded. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, says the vehicle appears to have driven over a bomb or been struck by fire from Syria.

It would be the first time an Israeli has been killed by fire emanating from the Syrian civil war.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Syrian government troops shelled nearby targets on the Syrian border, raising the possibility the vehicle was hit by errant fire.
