The Catholic Church in Mexico has suspended seven priests, including one who served in Los Angeles, from its diocese in the border city of Tijuana while it investigates them for alleged sexual harassment and abuse.

The Diocese of Tijuana didn't reveal the names of the priests but it confirmed to The Associated Press that Rev. Jeffrey Newell is among them.

Newell was first mentioned in a statement by the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, the main U.S. victims group known as SNAP, as being part of the group of priests under investigation.

Newell was accused of sexual abuse 20 years ago when he served at the Los Angeles archdiocese.
