BERLIN – German Chancellor Angela Merkel is signaling willingness to consider policy concessions to Britain as leaders spar over who should head the European Union's executive arm.
Merkel backs former Luxembourg leader Jean-Claude Juncker as European Commission president, but Britain opposes the veteran advocate of EU integration. Juncker was the candidate of conservatives who finished first in European Parliament elections.
Merkel has repeatedly said it's important to keep Britain, where anti-EU sentiment is high, in the bloc.
She said after meeting her Danish counterpart Thursday that every country should be taken seriously and "we can't fulfill every wish, but that means that in other areas we can think about what is very important to Great Britain."
Merkel cited issues such as reducing bureaucracy and considering what the EU should and shouldn't do.
