A senior police official in Pakistan says the husband of a woman stoned to death by her family earlier this week was arrested for killing his first wife, though the case against him was withdrawn.

Police official Zulfiqar Hameed said Thursday that the man, Mohammed Iqbal, was arrested after the 2009 killing but a family member later forgave him. That's allowed under Pakistani law. Iqbal did not respond to repeated requests for comment from The Associated Press.

Two of Iqbal's cousins said he had been forgiven by one of his sons for the killing.

Iqbal's second wife was bludgeoned to death Tuesday in the eastern city of Lahore by family members. Iqbal and her lawyer said the family was angry because they wanted her to marry someone else.
