China's government says it plans to take 5 million older commercial vehicles off the road this year in an effort to clean up smog-choked cities.

A Cabinet statement says the plan is part of efforts to revive stalled progress toward meeting environmental goals. It called the country's environmental situation "extremely grim."

The plan issued Monday said commercial vehicles that fail to meet standards for cleaner emissions will be "phased out" by the end of next year, though it gave no details of how that will happen.

China's major cities suffer from severe smog. Industry analysts say authorities have been reluctant until now to enforce stricter emissions standards to avoid forcing older vehicles off the road and hurting small businesses.
