LONDON – Britain's High Court has ruled that King Richard III should be buried in the city of Leicester, where his skeleton was found under a parking lot in 2012.
A group of distant relatives wanted the monarch, who died in 1485, interred in the northern England city of York, to which he had strong ties.
Three judges ruled Friday that there were no grounds to overturn the government's decision to grant a burial license to Leicester. Richard's remains are due to be enshrined in the city's cathedral.
Richard is one of England's most controversial kings, deposed in civil war and portrayed as a hunchbacked villain in Shakespeare's play "Richard III."
The judges said it was "time for King Richard III to be given a dignified reburial, and finally laid to rest."
