A spokesman for India's ruling Congress party has conceded defeat in the national election, saying the nation voted "against us."

Shakil Ahmed, a party spokesman, told The Associated Press on Friday that trends from the official vote counting Friday were "certainly not" in his party's favor.

The Election Commission was expected to announce full results later Friday. But early trends suggested that the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party would earn enough parliamentary seats to create a government without forming a coalition with regional leaders.
