TRIPOLI, Libya – Libyan security officials say the head of intelligence for the country's eastern sector has been assassinated in the city of Benghazi.
Officials from Benghazi's security directorate say gunmen shot spy chief Ibrahim Senussi three times — in the head, neck and chest — as he was driving in downtown Benghazi on Thursday.
The officials say the attack happened in front of the Central Benghazi Medical Center. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to media.
No further details were immediately available.
Libya has seen a severe deterioration in security since the civil war that led to the ouster of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi. Authorities have depended on unruly militias in the absence of a strong police force or a unified military.
