Fort Hood Families Mourn Their Fallen Heroes; All 16 Shooting Victims Expected To Survive

One of the soldiers killed in the Fort Hood shooting has been identified — family members confirmed it was U.S. Army Sgt. Timothy Owens, a native of Effingham, Ill.

Owens was one of four people — including the gunman, Spc. Ivan Lopez, originally from Puerto Rico — killed during the Wednesday attack at the U.S. Army base in central Texas. Another 16 were wounded.

Glen Welton, Owens' cousin, says he learned of Owens' death Wednesday in a telephone call from Owens' wife, Billie Owens.

Welton was not familiar with details of Sgt. Owens' death.

Owens' mother, 77-year-old Mary Muntean of Effingham, said she had learned of her son's death in a phone call with her daughter-in-law, too.

An official from Scott & White Memorial Hospital in nearby Temple, Texas, expressed optimism Thursday that none of the 16 people who were wounded in the shooting would die.

The three critically wounded patients were expected to survive and several others were to be discharged later in the day, said Dr. Matthew Davis, the hospital's trauma director.

Among the wounded is an Iraq War veteran from western New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday.

Maj. Patrick Miller, 32, who lives with his wife outside Austin, Texas, is a native of Allegany in Cattaraugus County.

His condition wasn't released, but a doctor at a Texas hospital treating some of the wounded said he doesn't expect any more deaths resulting from the shooting.

Miller's family did not respond to phone calls and emails Thursday. His parents, Carole and Dr. John Miller, were en route to Texas on Thursday, according to local media reports.

Miller was a twice-deployed Iraq veteran who graduated from his hometown college, St. Bonaventure University, in 2003 and earned masters' degrees in business and public administration from Syracuse University in 2009, his Facebook page said. He was also enrolled in the Reserve Officer Training Corps while at St. Bonaventure, a private Catholic school near the Pennsylvania border.
