KINGSTON, Jamaica – An international media organization is calling for authorities in Barbados to drop criminal indecency charges against three journalists.
The Vienna-based International Press Institute says the publisher, editor-in-chief and a senior reporter at the Nation newspaper face up to five years in prison due to the publication of an image showing two minors having sex. The journalists have been charged with violating child protection laws.
In a Wednesday statement, IPI director Alison Bethel McKenzie says the controversial decision to publish the photo "does not merit prison time."
The image depicted a boy and a girl with blurred-out faces engaging in sex in a classroom at a Barbados secondary school. It was apparently taken from a video that was circulating on social media and accompanied an article about the incident.
