The lead defense attorney for Haiti's former dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier says judges will be responsible for a "civil war" if an appeals court rules against his client.

Lawyer Reynold Georges made the remarks at a news conference Tuesday after he filed an appeal against a recent court decision that "Baby Doc" Duvalier can face charges involving human rights abuses.

An appellate court last month called for further investigation into human rights abuses allegedly committed during Duvalier's 15-year reign. The decision creates an opportunity for prosecutors to submit more evidence and perhaps even put him on trial.

Duvalier returned to Haiti in 2011 following 25 years in exile. Human rights and embezzlement charges were filed against him.
