LAGOS, Nigeria – A friend and former Cabinet minister says Nigerian security agents seized the passport of ousted Central Bank governor Lamido Sanusi and threatened arrest.
Nasir El-Rufai told The Associated Press Friday that Sanusi's lawyers are filing suit for alleged breach of human rights and threats of arrest and malicious prosecution.
President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday ousted the internationally respected Sanusi, accusing him of "financial recklessness." Critics say Sanusi was dismissed for exposing some $20 billion in missing petrodollars.
Sanusi told Channels TV he will challenge the move in court because it threatens the future independence of the Central Bank.
El-Rufai said agents seized his passport when he returned to Nigeria Thursday. The State Security Service spokeswoman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
