VATICAN CITY – The Legion of Christ religious order has elected a new superior and governing council for the first time since its founder was revealed to have been a pedophile and fraud.
But in a sign that the Holy See didn't fully trust the Legion's own choices, the Vatican itself appointed two reform-minded advisers to serve on the order's government, including the new No. 2. The Vatican has run the Legion since 2010.
The new director general is the Rev. Eduardo Robles Gil, a Mexican longtime collaborator of the Legion's disgraced late founder, the Rev. Marcial Maciel.
Gil said Thursday he adopted as his own a statement issued by the Legion in which the cult-like order distanced itself from Maciel, apologized to his victims, acknowledged its own problems and vowed continue reforms.
