Greek officials say a second ship is heading to earthquake-struck island of Kefalonia to provide additional emergency accommodation after thousands of residents stayed away from their homes as aftershocks continued.

Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis said the second vessel was due on the western island later Tuesday after some 900 people spent the night on a car ferry.

Sunday's magnitude 5.9 quake damaged roads, homes and public buildings, mostly around Lixouri, the island's second largest town.

Michalakis said building repairs could not start until the aftershocks had subsided.
