A Phoenix man was stopped trying to smuggle a woman, a Thai national, across the U.S.-Mexico border inside a suitcase.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the Port of Nogales discovered 48-year-old Pornkamol Mongkolsermsak while inspecting a Honda SUV entering the United States on Dec. 30. The identity of the 56-year-old man has not been revealed.
Edith Serrano, a Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman quoted by Arizona Central said the woman was hidden beneath clothing and zipped shut in the suitcase. Both the woman and alleged smuggler were taken into custody.
Border patrol agents also stopped smugglers last trying to move ammunition and drugs across the border, Serrano said.
Mongkolsermsak was being charged with re-entry after deportation. Authorities didn't immediately know if she has a lawyer yet.
