Indian railway officials say nine people died after a fire engulfed three cars of a passenger train as it was traveling from Mumbai to the Himalayan town of Dehradun.

The Press Trust of India news agency quoted Western Railway official Sharat Chandra as saying nine people died in the blaze.

Authorities are trying to determine what caused the fire to break out before dawn Wednesday as most passengers were sleeping.

Chandra says officials are working to identify those killed. Police say another four people were injured.

The train was stopped in the town of Gholvad in Maharashtra state where firefighters put out the flames.
