BUCHAREST, Romania – A court has convicted a former Romanian prime minister of taking bribes during his time in office and sentenced him to four years in prison.
Monday's court action came as 63-year-old Adrian Nastase, who served as Romania's prime minister from 2000 to 2004, was reportedly considering running in this year's presidential election.
The High Court of Cassation and Justice convicted him of illegally receiving for free 630,000 euros of construction work and imported goods for two homes from 2002 to 2004.
The court also convicted Irina Jianu of secretly providing those services to Nastase to keep her job as chief inspector at a state construction company. She was sentenced to four years in prison.
Nastase's wife, Dana, was convicted of being an accomplice and given a three-year suspended sentence.
