Cayman Islands police have arrested two local men on suspicion of calling in a bomb hoax that prompted the evacuation of two major beach resorts at the start of the winter tourist season.

Fire, police and ambulance services rushed to Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and the Caribbean Club condominium hotel on Saturday after bomb threats were made. Traffic was diverted around the resorts, which had hundreds of guests. A search turned up nothing.

Police Superintendent Kurt Walton said Thursday that the hoax resulted in the deployment of "considerable police and other emergency resources." He says the two men face a maximum prison term of 10 years if convicted.

The suspects were not identified, but their ages were given as 48 and 53. It was not immediately clear if they had lawyers.
