Greek police say they have arrested a childless couple in Athens on suspicion of buying an 8-month-old Roma girl and trying to register it as their own.

The arrests announced Friday come amid an international investigation after another couple in Greece was found living with a little girl that was not theirs. Bulgarian authorities are trying to establish whether a local Roma woman is the mother of that girl, aged 5 or 6, known as "Maria."

A Greek police statement says the couple arrested in Athens on suspicion of child abduction was taken into custody on Wednesday. It said the couple allegedly paid a Roma woman 4,000 euros ($5,500) for the baby.

Police claim the suspects, aged 53 and 48, unsuccessfully tried to register the infant as their daughter.
