LONDON – An 84-year-old man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison in Britain for repeatedly raping a deaf and mute girl he trafficked into the U.K. and kept as a virtual slave.
Ilyas Ashar — who brought the girl into the U.K. from Pakistan in 2000 when she was around 10 — was previously convicted on trafficking and benefits fraud charges in relation to the child.
The victim in the case, who is now a young woman and cannot be identified for legal reasons, was beaten and kept in a cellar.
Judge Peter Lakin sentenced Ashar on Wednesday, saying he had not treated the girl as a human being but as "merely an object to be used, abused and cast aside."
Ashar had pleaded not guilty.
