Police in south-central Jamaica have arrested a former municipal and three other people in connection with an alleged illegal fuel supply ring.

The suspects' names are being withheld as the investigation continues. But police on Sunday confirmed that one of the men is a former member of the Clarendon Parish Council. Parish councils in Jamaica handle a range of municipal issues, from road repairs to waste management.

Police say officers raided the former official's house in the town of Chatteau and seized numerous items, including truck tires and drums filled with diesel fuel.

In recent months, bauxite mining operations in that area of Jamaica have complained about thefts of fuel and other supplies.
