KUWAIT CITY – Kuwait newspapers say a court has sentenced an online activist to two years in prison for insulting the Gulf nation's ruler, in the first case since a blanket pardon for similar offenses last summer.
In the past two years, Kuwait has charged dozens of people for social media posts considered offensive to the country's emir. It's part of similar crackdowns across the Western-allied Gulf region.
The reports Wednesday say Hijab al-Hajri was charged for Twitter posts deemed insulting to the emir. The newspaper Alaan said al-Hajri plans to appeal.
In July, Kuwait's emir marked the Islamic holy month of Ramadan by pardoning all those convicted with insulting him.
