Jordan criticizes Israel's plan for new international airport on Red Sea, close to its border

AMMAN, Jordan – Jordan is criticizing an Israeli plan to build a new international airport on the Red Sea, very near Jordan's airport in the Gulf of Aqaba.

Jordan's civil aviation chief Mohammad Quraan says the edge of the planned Israeli airport — if it were built — would be 200 meters (yards) away from the Jordanian one, which would present a huge risk to air traffic safety.

He said Wednesday Jordan would "be forced" to take legal action if the Israeli plan for an international airport in Eilat went ahead.

At the moment, Israel has only a domestic hub in Eilat.

Haim Assaraf, Israel's deputy chief of mission at the embassy in Amman, confirmed that Israel plans to build the airport in Eilat, and said the embassy has "received the Jordanian concerns."
