SKorea urges united global effort against NKorea's nuclear weapons program

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

South Korea is urging the international community to make a united effort against North Korea's nuclear program, as it has against the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se on Friday told the U.N. General Assembly that North Korea launched long-range missiles and conducted a nuclear test this year in "blatant violation" of Security Council resolutions.

Yun says nations should work together "to prevent the advent of another nuclear-armed state."

He also criticizes the North's "inhumane" decision to postpone planned reunions of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War that were due to happen this week.

The reunions had been seen as a sign of reduced tensions.

Yun says South Korea stands ready to help North Korea if it changes its ways.

North Korea speaks next week.
