Greek police have banned a protest rally planned in central Athens this weekend by a group of special forces reservists who demanded the resignation of the government and the appointment of an interim government under the guarantee of the military.

The association had called the rally for Saturday evening in the capital's Syntagma Square outside Parliament to press a total of 15 demands, which it had made public on a posting on its website. The posting, which also called for the resignation of the country's president and the expulsion of all migrants in the country illegally, triggered a judicial investigation.

Police issued a decision Friday banning the gathering, on the grounds that counter-demonstrations by opposing groups were likely and the rally could lead to unrest.
