The British government says it will host the 2014 NATO summit, the first time the meeting has been held in the country in more than 20 years.

Prime Minister David Cameron announced the news Friday, saying the 2014 summit will be an important moment in the history of the alliance as the NATO mission in Afghanistan draws to a close.

The date and venue for the summit were not disclosed.

Britain last hosted the summit in 1990, when Margaret Thatcher was prime minister and the Cold War was drawing to a close.

NATO summits typically occur every two years. The last took place in Chicago in 2012.
