Opposition protesters shot dead a trainee policeman and injured two other officers as renewed violence broke out Monday in Guinea's capital Conakry, five days ahead of elections, the government said.

"According to hospital and security sources - the provisional toll at 12:00 GMT - incidents in the capital have left one dead, a trainee policeman, (with) two injured police officers, also shot...," a government spokesman said in a statement, adding that 49 other people sustained minor injuries.
