An Italian priest reportedly gave Pope Francis a 20-year-old car to make his way around Vatican City.

The white Renault 4, which has 190,000 miles on its odometer, was presented to the Pope by Father Renzo Zocca on Saturday, BBC reports.

Francis, who later drove the vehicle, previously owned the same model in his native Argentina. Since being elected by the papal conclave in March, Francis has urged officials to forgo expensive limousines in an attempt to encourage austerity within the Catholic Church.

Father Zocca told the Italian magazine Famiglia Cristiana that he wanted to give Pope Francis a gift following his effort to create a church for the poor.

"What better than my old Renault 4?" he asked.

Father Zocca said he was surprised to receive a phone call from the pontiff accepting the gift, BBC reports.
