South African president says Mandela in critical condition, but responding to treatment

JOHANNESBURG – The South African president says Nelson Mandela remains in critical condition, but notes the fact that he has left hospital indicates the progress that he has made.

President Jacob Zuma said in a meeting with journalists on Tuesday that he is pleased that 95-year-old Mandela had gone home and that he is responding to treatment.

An ambulance returned the former president and leader of the anti-apartheid movement to his Johannesburg house on Sunday. Zuma's office says Mandela will receive the same level of care that he did in the hospital, administered by the same doctors.

Mandela was admitted to the hospital on June 8 for what the government described as a recurring lung infection. Legal papers filed by his family said he was on life support.
